Salzburg, the City

Mozart's Birthplace

Salzburg always was and remains Austria's cultural hotspot. As the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Salzburg proves its cultural credentials year in year out.

The festival city Salzburg is always worth a visit - even during Salzburg's rather typical drizzle. Stroll through the picturesque Getreidegasse, passing the house where Mozart was born and past inviting pubs and restaurants. Exclusive boutiques are tempting the purse strings, global brands such as Louis Vuitton, Escada, Gucci or Burberry are on offer here. Our culinary insider tips: apart from the traditional coffee houses such as Tomaselli or Bazar you should also try the Demel Café at the Mozartplatz [square] or the delicious finger foods in the Carpe Diem in the Getreidegasse.

Should you visit Salzburg during the festival you can witness Salzburg erupting - after all, the world-famous Salzburg Festival is the main event of the year.

Another must-see is the Museum der Moderne [Museum of Modernity], which resides above the city on the Mönchsberg [monk's hill]. From here you have a fantastic view across the old city, you can marvel at contemporary works of art or dine in the museum's restaurant.

Worth seeing is Hangar 7, a top tourist attraction and great example of stylish contemporary architecture. It is the private hangar at Salzburg airport of Dieter Mateschitz, the founder of the Red Bull energy drink. Boasting exclusive bars and the top restaurant Ikarus, this is the place to see and be seen. Top chefs from all over the world take up chef-residencies in a monthly cycle and cook up their specialities - always following one guiding principle only: achieving the very best at an international level!
